Pilates for Boxing
We are seeing more and more people use Pilates as a support and conditioning compliment to their chosen sport. Sommer Louise is one of our regular clients and has brought Pilates into her weekly regime to assist and improve her passion for Boxing. Whilst not a professional Boxer, Sommer is serious about her Boxing and looking for ways to better her posture, balance and position in the ring.
“I’ve been doing Pilates with Pilates & Co for over 12 months now because it really supports my boxing and weights work, but specifically my boxing. What I’ve found is the core work that I get from this type of training is absolutely essential for keeping my posture and position when I’m moving around the ring.” Sommer Louise.
With a specific focus on core activation, Sommer participates in both Small Group and Group Reformer classes with us weekly at our Burleigh and Bundall studios. Pilates helps build strength while increasing flexibility, and overall range of motion in the body.
Traditional training for boxing has always been big cardio sessions, pad and strength work. Pilates provides a different way and more variety in developing and conditioning the body. For many that have always trained under traditional methods for boxing, Pilates also provides a great opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and test the body in new ways.
We also have ex AFL star and Boxer Barry Hall train with us in the studio. Barry has also found Pilates to be beneficial to his boxing career. With tight hip flexibility and wanting to activate the core, Barry has a 1:1 session with us weekly to work on mobility and core.
The 5 main benefits of Pilates for Boxers include:

3. Increase Flexibility
Working the body in all directions from spinal extension and flexion, to internal and external rotation and side bending Pilates improves and increases the body’s range of motion and flexibility.
4. Improves Posture
Posture and stance in the ring is extremely important. Pilates helps to improve muscle symmetry and overall posture.
