STRONGER JOINTS BETTER POWER - THE SCIENCE BEHIND JUMPING by Lesleigh Burrell

Stronger Joints, Better Power – All While Lying Down? Yes, Please!

Ready to jump into something that’s fun and scientifically backed to boost your physical performance and joint health? Our Reformer Jumpboard Class isn’t just another Pilates session – it’s a smart, low-impact way to train your body for real-life strength, stability, and resilience.

Using the jumpboard, you’ll perform a series of plyometric-style jumps while lying down, giving you all the benefits of explosive training without the heavy impact on your joints. This type of ballistic movement is one of the best ways to improve Rate of Force Development (RFD) – the speed at which your muscles generate force. RFD is a major player in athletic performance, but here’s the kicker: it’s also directly linked to joint health, longevity, and injury prevention.

Studies have shown that higher quadriceps RFD is associated with better physical function and a reduced risk of knee osteoarthritis, especially in women (Hu et al., 2018; Suzuki et al., 2022). Building explosive quad strength helps stabilise the knee, reducing the chance of injuries like ACL tears and the risk of falls as we age.

Whether you're an athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply looking to move with more power and less pain, jumpboard training provides a dynamic way to train RFD.

It engages fast-twitch muscle fibers, enhances neuromuscular coordination, and increases tendon stiffness – all key ingredients for stable, powerful movement (Suchomel et al., 2018).

So, why not train smart and have fun? Join our Reformer Jumpboard Class and experience how bouncing on your back can build a stronger, more stable you. Your joints will thank you!
