Pilates for Golfers, With James Goffman

The nature of Golf sees the repetitive movement of the same muscle groups over and over. This continual stress of rotation and extension can lead to injury and recurring injury over years of golf practice. Pilates is the perfect support for golfers to work on injury prevention and recovery through the strengthening of core, balance, stability and flexibility.

James Goffman

In addition to injury recovery and prevention, Pilates as a support to golfing practice can see a noticeable improvement in performance.

Pilates & Co work with Golfers on all levels in the studio to support and improve their passion for Golf. We have had the pleasure of working with James Goffman recently at our Bundall Studio. James joined us with his Mum Judy on our 6 for $60 intro offer and has continued to develop his Pilates practice attending 2 group classes per week.

James is embarking on a career in Golf and currently has a Golf Australia handicap of +2. We were keen to find out a little more about him and how he has built Pialtes into his training schedule.

James Goffman

18 years old and born on the Gold Coast. He is currently attending Bond University and doing a bachelor in International Relations.

How did you get into Golf:

I got into golf through my dad as he is a mad golfer! And very good too!! I started when I was about 5 years old for fun and around 8 years old got my first ever golf lesson. At 14 I played my first Australian Junior ranking event (that’s when I got very serious with golf) at that time I was a mad soccer player and swimmer but didn’t enjoy the two as much as golf. So here I am, still playing golf now.

What does your weekly Golf regime include:

Golf all day! In reality, a day would consist of practicing for a few hours on certain parts of my golf game, either going to the gym (3 times a week) or Pilates (2 times a week). I try to play every day, however if not I include one rest day depending on my schedule.

Which Gold Coast course do you enjoy playing on most:

I am a member at both Royal Queensland Golf Club, Brisbane and Royal Pines Golf Club, Gold Coast and enjoying playing both of these courses.

What has been your golfing/career highlight so far:

Ranked in the Australian Men’s Open Order of Merit. Top 5 in the QLD Order of Merit. Multiple wins in Queensland Junior Events. Also caddied for major champions Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott

What attracted you to Pilates:

I wanted to become more flexible and wanted to try something different – I didn’t like yoga.

How do you think Pilates is supporting your Golfing:

I have become more flexible and strengthened my core.

What's your favourite Pilates move:

Short spine (tight hamstrings from walking too much).

What challenges you most in Pilates:

Lunges standing on foot bar doing splits I find very hard.

Favourite food:

Sushi.

What hobbies do you have outside of your Golf:

I like doing gym fitness.

What are your goals for 2022 and beyond:

To produce a national golf event win, make the Australian team, to continue improving and learning about my golf and being a respectful human.

Favourite Golfer:

Adam Scott

Something we should really know about you:

I am a fanatic with war history!

Favourite song:

Sundream - RUFUS DU SOL

Favourite quote:

"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented." - Arnold Palmer

We look forward to watching James’ career grow and to working with him to achieve those goals for 2022 and beyond.
